Gather Lesson Learned: Who’s Meant to Be There

Last year I had the privilege of supporting a tech startup here in Denver to develop and facilitate a reflection session following a morning of DEI training.

We anticipated 30+ people would join.

Turns out? Just 5 people attended. 😔.

Cue:

While I was initially disappointed, those five people were incredibly engaged in the solo reflection, small group shares, and large group discussion I had thoughtfully planned. At the end of the session, each attendee made a commitment to bring lessons from the morning and our conversation back to their team. I left feeling proud. 🙌

LESSON LEARNED

When we put our heart into creating gatherings, know that whoever is meant to be in the room (or on zoom), is exactly who’s meant to receive it.

 YOUR TURN

Next time you have less people than you imagined at a gathering, whether it’s your quarterly ERG meeting or an event you’re putting on as a solopreneur (I see you!), take solace in knowing the people who were meant to be there were indeed there. You created a sacred space for those who DID attend and there’s a ripple effect to that impact.

Lastly: I’m here if you ever want to vent about having less people than you’d hoped for. Don't hesitate to give me a shout.
