The power (+ simplicity!) of the double-duty nametag
As anyone who has attended a gathering of mine can attest, I love an intentional name tag. But not just your regular ‘ole name and maybe (or rather, hopefully!) pronouns (learn why here).
Yes, it’s helpful to have people’s names written down so you can covertly peek down and avoid feeling silly for not recalling the name of the person who just introduced themselves to you 30 seconds ago. At my gatherings, nametags serve a dual purpose. I ask attendees to jot down their name and pronouns, along with a word/short phrase that is relevant to the gathering’s purpose or theme.
For the front-yard concerts I’ve hosted (more on that in this article), the prompts have been (surprise, surprise) music-related. “Name + your very first concert.” “Name + your first CD.” Looking to generate spirited conversation among strangers? Get them talking about their first CD (or depending on their age, their first record; for Gen Z, would it be the first playlist they recall streaming?!).
